Fence Reveal

unveiling our finished backyard fence

It is finally here. The first fully completed project. The first reveal post of many to come. Amid the slew of other projects going on in the house, it is so great to fully check off a project as complete instead of being at 80-90% done as so many rooms are at the moment, waiting for those final touches… But I digress, back to the fence.

The dream started back when we got our house. We wanted to create a backyard space that worked really well for our goal of having a large garden space and pets someday. Both for the sake of pets and to help keep pests out of the garden and to visually help separate the more functional space of the backyard from front and side yard a fence was a must. This summer, in-between working on our house trim and windows we designed and build our dream fence. I am so excited to get to show it to you today!

Before

The back yard had a fence when we purchased it, but it was an ugly chain -link fence that only enclosed part of the back yard. It was very difficult to navigate around and caused the whole back yard to have less useable space. So, we removed it. In addition, we cleaned up the space, removing brush and plants to open up one large L shaped backyard on the north and part of the west sides of our home.

It was easy to decide where we wanted to place the new fence, there was a natural dividing line and the corner of our deck on the west side, and a shed on the north side and our property line. Filling in these sections with fencing, we could connect up to our neighbors’ fences and have a fully enclosed space. We decided to come to the middle of the shed rather than fully enclosing it behind or in front of the fence so that when we update the shed, we can have doors on both sides to easily get items out from either yard space.

Given the classic nature of our house, I knew I wanted to enhance that feel with a with a white picket fence. However, I wanted something unique to the design, and eventually after perusing different styles of fence, landed on a design that was both unique and beautiful.

And so without further ado… our fence!

After

I simply cannot get over how stunning it looks framed by the raised beds. It is so picturesque. It is amazing to get to walk through the gate into my garden and it will only get better as we keep working on finishing out the back yard with more raised beds and plants and yes, that updated shed.

One of my favorite elements is the curve we put in the sections of the pickets. I love the feel it gives of rising up to the post and how it draws the eye to the post topper.

The post cap as well adds a touch of that classic elegance that sets this fence apart from a basic picket fence. To finish off the fence chose black hardware for the gate to lend nice clean contrast to the white of the fence.

And there you have it – our white picket fence. Getting to design the fence was so much fun and I am so glad I took the time to add those elements of detail that make it unique and beautiful.
